Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, today released the following statement in response to the revised version of the City of Boston’s Trust Act:
“We are grateful for the City’s continued work to end the entanglement of local police with ICE. The revised Trust Act strengthens a policy meant to protect our immigrant neighbors, friends, and coworkers.
“But we must—and can—do more to make Boston safe and welcoming for everyone. In the face of a federal administration hellbent on detaining and deporting immigrants in droves, Boston needs to set clearer rules for when local police will work together with federal immigration officials, and when they won’t. While the updated legislation limits collaboration between Boston police and federal immigration enforcement, it does not end it, and leaves room for Boston police officers to help ICE continue to tear apart families. We look forward to working with the newly elected city council to address these remaining issues and further strengthen the Trust Act.”
