The Boston City Council today affirmed the Trust Act, an ordinance that seeks to protect immigrant residents.
After the election results, the ACLU of Massachusetts released its “Firewalls for Freedom” — a playbook for municipal, legislative, and executive leaders to keep Massachusetts safe and free during the second Trump administration. Among those recommendations, the ACLU calls on cities and towns to pass or strengthen ordinances addressing local police coordination with ICE.
Carol Rose, Executive Director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, released the following statement in response:
“State and local governments should use their limited resources to provide the highest possible quality services to residents, keeping communities safe and ensuring all people have what they need to thrive — not enforcing federal immigration efforts that leave children without their parents, employers without their workers, and send fear throughout our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. The Trust Act — and ordinances like it across the state — help protect our immigrant neighbors, friends, and coworkers by ensuring local agencies are not in the business of enforcing federal immigration laws. We applaud Boston’s recommitment to this law and thank the many other municipalities taking similar steps; before Trump takes office, it’s critically important that elected leaders at all levels of government take proactive steps to shore up protections for our civil liberties and civil rights.”
