Lynn resident Feliciano Gomez Lopez, a client of the ACLU of Massachusetts and immigration attorney Julio Cortes del Olmo, is being released from a six-month ordeal in immigration detention in time to spend the holiday weekend with family. Last week, Mr. Gomez prevailed in his immigration court case and won an order that prevents his removal to his native Guatemala. Despite this win, the federal government did not release Mr. Gomez. After his lawyers filed an emergency motion in federal court today, the government agreed to release Mr. Gomez in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. His release is anticipated before 5:00 PM today, and will allow him to be reunited with his nine-year old son and 12-year-old step-daughter, both U.S. citizens.

The ACLU of Massachusetts and attorney del Olmo provided pro bono representation in Mr. Gomez's federal litigation as part of the Federal Litigation Program of the New England Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
