The ACLU of Massachusetts today commends Governor Baker on keeping an open mind about the Safe Communities Act and welcomes opportunity to further discuss the benefits of passing the bill for Massachusetts.

"After initial statements saying he opposed the bill, it is good to see that Governor Baker is still open to hearing more," said Carol Rose, executive director at the ACLU of Massachusetts. "Much of the opposition to the bill can be chalked up to misinformation. For example, the bill would not make MA a sanctuary state, as it has been defined by the federal government.

"All Massachusetts residents stand to gain from passage of the Safe Communities Act. The Safe Communities Act would turn our welcoming rhetoric into reality by ensuring that local police are not acting as ICE agents."
