Carol Rose, executive director at the ACLU of Massachusetts, released the following statement about the ACLU of Massachusetts' opposition to Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court:
"The ACLU of Massachusetts joins the national ACLU in opposition to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court because of doubt about his fitness to serve on our nation’s highest court. The credibility of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony and other accusations against Judge Kavanaugh inform the ACLU of Massachusetts decision. So, too, does Judge Kavanaugh’s own testimony, which was partisan, injudicious, incredible, and often misleading, raising serious concerns about his neutrality and judicial temperament. Given these circumstances, and given that Judge Kavanaugh has been nominated by a president who is himself under investigation, Judge Kavanaugh should not be confirmed. We also note Judge Kavanaugh’s track record of ruling against civil rights and civil liberties on cases involving abortion rights, due process, immigrant rights, domestic spying, and executive branch power. Opposing a Supreme Court nominee is a rare move for our organization, but the ACLU of Massachusetts’ commitment to civil rights and civil liberties compel us not to be silent at this moment in history."
