What are TRAP laws, what do they do, and how could they impact your reproductive rights?
If you’ve been watching the news or scrolling through Twitter in recent months, you have probably come across the term “TRAP laws.” And if you found yourself scratching your head and wondering what in the world these laws are and what they have to do with you, you’re not alone.
Luckily, good ole ACLU of Massachusetts has got your back.
TRAP stands for targeted regulation of abortion providers. These laws pose a critical danger to the reproductive freedoms of people across the country. TRAP laws limit access to abortion providers by requiring clinics to adhere to arbitrary and prohibitive requirements.
This month, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide on a case about TRAP laws in Texas, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. This case is a big deal. The Supreme Court’s decision will have a profound impact on abortion access in Texas and may affect what restrictions states are permitted to have for generations to come.
With this monumental decision coming out any day now, it is all the more important to learn about TRAP laws. And while we could write all about them and their devastating implications, we had a better idea — allow Yolanda, your new favorite cartoon uterus, to explain instead.
