This September 6, voters in Essex County will be able to choose a sheriff – an opportunity that happens only every six years.
The Essex County sheriff has a very important job - to oversee county jails, where over 1,000 people are incarcerated every day who will return to their communities in no more than 2.5 years. The decisions that sheriffs make every day about conditions and programming have a huge impact on the people in their custody and the community beyond the jail walls.
In the last Essex sheriff’s election, there were more blank ballots than the difference between the top two candidates.
