Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, today released the following statement in response to the U.S. Senate confirmation of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as Secretary of the Department of Labor:
“Throughout his career, Marty Walsh has championed worker’s rights. As the nation faces challenging unemployment and a longstanding racial wealth gap, working families have a new advocate in Washington. We wish U.S. Labor Secretary Walsh the best.
“At the same time, we welcome Boston’s next chapter: When she is sworn in, City Council President Kim Janey will be the city’s first Black mayor, and the first woman mayor. This milestone comes at a crucial time for Boston; the next administration must do all that it can to ensure an equitable COVID-19 recovery, an end to policing as usual, and a meaningful commitment to government transparency. The ACLU of Massachusetts looks forward to working with Acting Mayor Janey to build a Boston that centers civil rights and civil liberties for all.”
