In February 2013, the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts filed a civil rights lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Robert Schuler, a public official in the town of Shirley who was banned from town property.

Two months later, unable to settle the case with the town, we moved for summary judgment, believing that there are no issues of fact that need to be tried by a jury and that the judge should be able to rule on at least part of the case just on what we have alleged and the town has responded.

In August 2013, the Town of Shirley agreed to settle the civil rights lawsuit.
